Creating space for the positive with meditation

A paradigm shift for wrestling with negative thoughts

Yumi Sakugawa discovered meditation while living in Japan teaching ESL and struggling to find her path. Influenced by Eckart Tolle she dove into meditation to find her own experience. At age 23 she had a life changing epiphany on a train in Japan, reading Eckart Tolle, A New Earth when she was struck by the idea that only the present moment exists and you are not your thoughts, created a huge paradigm shift. Her struggle with clinical depression was a lifetime of wrestling with negative thoughts.

YUMI has become an Ignatz Awards nominated comic book artist and the author of I THINK I AM IN FRIEND-LOVE WITH YOU and YOUR ILLUSTRATED GUIDE TO BECOMING ONE WITH THE UNIVERSE. Her comics have also appeared in The Believer, Bitch, the Best American NonRequired Reading 2014, The Rumpus, Folio, Fjords Review, and other publications. A graduate from the fine art program of University of California, Los Angeles, she lives in Los Angeles.

We talk about her awakening and her 2015 book, There is No Right Way to Meditate and her personal awakening through meditation.
